There are functions which appears in every conversation such as referential function, conative function, emotive function, phatic function, poetic function, and metalingual function.
The researcher analyzes the problems based on Jacobson’s theories about six language functions and six constitutive factors in communication that must be appear which is corresponding with six language functions. This research was undertaken in order to make people comprehend of the language function who used in the society when they communicate to each other in every situation. This research discusses problems in drama script about the language functions are used by the main character and why his utterances work as a verbal art in Drama Death of a Salesman. These functions include describing, expressing emotional feeling of speaker, conveying ideas, maintain the contact, and persuading or commanding someone for take action through utterances from the speaker. In a conversation, the language which is uttered brings particular functions depending on the intention of the speaker.
